The Key to Ridding Schools of Nasty Social Behavior and Emotional Harm

I am deeply saddened by the way some teachers and students treat each other in school. We have all observed or heard about teachers and students belittling, ridiculing, intimidating and ignoring each other much too often. This kind of mistreatment occurs in our “best” schools and our “worst” schools. One might expect it in our worst schools, but not in our best schools. Yet, it happens all the time.

Students go to school to learn – not just subject knowledge, but how to be good…

The Real Technology Based Science Classroom

I have worked with my Biology/Chemistry teacher to create a fully technology based science classroom. Our students use macbooks as part of a 1 to 1 program in the high school. We have now taken the next step by using Edmodo (a free Facebook looking version of Moodle http://www.edmodo.com/) to communicate with students and parents in real time. This product allows students to collaborate, ask questions, see grades and see posting from the teacher. The…

The concept of the student coming up with a problem and then deciding what technology to use to solve the problem and the implications of this shift on purpose are thought provoking.

What is Five?

When I first started teaching grade 3 in 1979 I quickly noticed two

student behaviours that drove me crazy. When I walked around the room

to check on students’ work there seemed to be a relationship between

the closer I came to their desk and the rotation of the student’s

pencil. They would slowly turn to point the eraser at their page. The

second behaviour is related. I will use Arithmetic for the example, but

any subject could substitute. I noticed that when I… Continue
