J Daniel Hollinger The Key to Ridding Schools of Nasty Social Behavior and Emotional Harm

I am deeply saddened by the way some teachers and students treat each other in school. We have all observed or heard about teachers and students belittling, ridiculing, intimidating and ignoring each other much too often. This kind of mistreatment occurs in our “best” schools and our “worst” schools. One might expect it in our worst schools, but not in our best schools. Yet, it happens all the time.

Students go to school to learn – not just subject knowledge, but how to be good…

Mark Westerburg The Real Technology Based Science Classroom

I have worked with my Biology/Chemistry teacher to create a fully technology based science classroom. Our students use macbooks as part of a 1 to 1 program in the high school. We have now taken the next step by using Edmodo (a free Facebook looking version of Moodle http://www.edmodo.com/) to communicate with students and parents in real time. This product allows students to collaborate, ask questions, see grades and see posting from the teacher. The…

Reba Poteet TedxYED 3-5-2011

The concept of the student coming up with a problem and then deciding what technology to use to solve the problem and the implications of this shift on purpose are thought provoking.

Rick Fabbro What is Five?

When I first started teaching grade 3 in 1979 I quickly noticed two

student behaviours that drove me crazy. When I walked around the room

to check on students’ work there seemed to be a relationship between

the closer I came to their desk and the rotation of the student’s

pencil. They would slowly turn to point the eraser at their page. The

second behaviour is related. I will use Arithmetic for the example, but

any subject could substitute. I noticed that when I… Continue

Erin Schoening Facebook in the Primary Classroom

All too often primary grade students are left behind when it comes to using technology, and this includes the immense power that social networking sites offer in the classroom. Casting anxious eyes at Icelandic volcanoes... but looking good so far. Our April trip to New York was lost in cloud of volcanic ash... but did make it over in June... and so far omens looking favourable for Boston and #BLC10.

Reeling under our own neo-con assault on technology in teaching and learning since the UK government changed, so looking forward to the affirmation and restoration of faith that BLC always brings. If you meet any Brits during your time at BLC10 please…

From the NL Blog

BLC is an incubator of great ideas

Last spring, at the end of a full day of keynotes and presentations at BLC 11, @ewanmcintosh @dkuropatwa, a few others and I hit Beantown for refreshments and a kick at the day’s notes. The idea of problem-finding, of asking question to which no one knows the answers, emerged as a new model for pedagogy. [...]
